A fire-extinguisher of the type comprising dry powder and pressurising gas e.g. air comprises container 5 divided by movable piston 2 into a powder and gas-containing space 1 and gas space 8. and gasket 6 engaging piston 2 with the inner container wall and permitting gas flow preferentially in the direction from space I to space 8. Piston 2 may be secured by spring clamp 9 to container 5. On puncture of membrane 3 by pin 7 powder and gas are discharged from space 1 through nozzle 4, and the higher pressure in space 8 moves the piston. (For Figure see next column)
