Abstract
1,193,481. Coating apparatus. R. A. LABOMBARDE. 6 June, 1967 [5 Dec., 1966], No. 25963/67. Heading B2L. Coating apparatus comprises a generally cylindrical applicator roller having a resilient deformable face, a roller forming a nip with the applicator roller and having a hard face provided with a plurality of recesses, and pressure-applying means adapted to urge the rollers towards one another for effecting such deformation. The arrangement is intended to facilitate the coating off individual limp sheets with high viscosity hot melt composition by preventing the piling up of such material at the entrance to the nip between successive sheets passing through the flip. Sheets 37 are passed between a lower applicator roller 50 having a soft rubber surface 51, and a hard presser roller 57 formed with circumferential grooves 63. The rollers are pressed together by screw means 71 to form a depression 74 in surface 51. Highly viscous liquid 45 is applied to roller 50 by a roller 52 rotating in a trough 53, and the depth of coating on roller 50 is controlled by a roller 54 and scraper blade 55. The grooves 63 prevent accumulation of liquid at the entrance 69 of the coating nip 58 in which only the lower surface 43 of sheet 37 is coated. Liquid entering the grooves 63 between successive sheets is removed therefrom by a blade 66 having a serrated scraping edge 67. The rollers are heated electrically or by the circulation of oil. Sheet 37 then passes between an upper chilled feeding roller 76 and a lower heated, counter-rotating smoothing roller 77. The upper surface 42 of sheet 37 is then coated in the nip between an upper applicator roller 80 similar to roller 50, and a lower presser roller 81 similar to roller 57, liquid 45 being deposited on roller 80 by curtain means 87. The coated sheet passes through a flame polishing zone 33 and a quick chilling zone 34. A hard surfaced upper roller formed with pockets in its surface may serve as an applicator roller in co-operation with a lower deformable surfaced applicator roller for coating both sides of a sheet simultaneously. Rubber surface 51 may be in the form of a removable sheet having a spot-coating pattern formed thereon.
