Abstract
1,193,215. Zearalanone; zearalanol. COMMERCIAL SOLVENTS CORP. 27 Aug., 1968 [28 Aug., 1967; 15 Aug., 1968], No. 40836/68. Heading C2C. A method of preparing zearalanone, having the formula from zearalanol, having the formula which comprises: (a) slowly reacting chromic acid or the chromate of an alkali metal with an organic solution of zearalanol; (b) diluting the solution with sufficient water to separate the zearalanone from the solution as a precipitate; and (c) separating the precipitated zearalanone from the solution. The high melting diastereoisomer of zearalanol may be produced by dissolving a mixture of the high and low melting diastereoisomers of zearalanol in warm glacial acetic acid, cooling to precipitate the low melting isomer of zearalanol, and after separating the crystals, diluting the separated solution with water to precipitate the high melting isomer of zearalanol. The low melting diastereoisomer is then oxidized to zearalanone by the above process, and then reduced to give a mixture of the high melting and low melting diastereoisomers of zearalanol. The procedure is repeated whereby the low melting diastereoisomer is recycled to extinction.
