Abstract
1,192,715. Solution polymerization. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 11 Dec., 1968 [15 Jan., 1968], No. 58897/68. Heading C3P. A mixture of a monomer containing a group, hydrogen peroxide or an organic hydroperoxide, and a mutual non-aqueous solvent therefor are polymerized in the presence of an activator salt which is soluble in the mutual solvent to at least 2% at 25‹ C. and which is a chloride, bromide, nitrate, thiocyanate or sulphate of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, calcium or strontium, the chloride, bromide or thiocyanate of ammonium or quaternary ammonium, or a hydrochloric hydrobromic acid or hydrothiocyanic acid salt of a primary, secondary or tertiary amine. In Examples 95 and 96 the hydrochloric acid salt of 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine is used as activator and as monomer. The polymers produced have hydroxyl end groups.
