1,192,681. Isomerization of hop α-acids. " COOPPAL ET COMPAGNIE-POUDRERIE ROYALE DE WETTEREN " and M. VERZELE. 10 Jan., 1968 [12 Jan., 1967; 28 Dec., 1967], No. 1381/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C6] Hop α-acids are isomerized into iso-α acids in the presence of isooctane or methyl cyclohexane. (1) A solution of α-acids in isooctane or methyl cyclohexane, derived either directly from hops or from a hop extract, is rendered alkaline with sodium carbonate, the mixture is boiled for 90 minutes under reflux to effect the isomerization, the reaction mixture is acidified with sulphuric acid, and an organic phase is separated from an aqueous phase and evaporated until a syrupy paste containing the iso-α acids is obtained. (2) In this embodiment the iso-α acids are extracted directly from the aqueous phase of the reaction mixture. Thus, the aqueous phase is acidified to pH 7 and then treated with isooctane or methyl cyclohexane, the aqueous and organic phases are separated, the aqueous phase is brought to a pH of 3 and the iso-α acids recovered therefrom by methylene chloride. The liberated iso-α acids may be treated with sodium or potassium carbonate to obtain the corresponding sodium and potassium salts, which are more soluble in water than the free iso-α acid.
