Abstract

1,191,873. Opening containers; tapping casks; bushes for bungholes. STERN-BRAUEREI CARL FUNKE A.G. 21 Aug., 1967 [20 Aug., 1966; 6 June, 1967], No. 38448/67. Headings B8D and B8T. A plastics barrel 11, e.g. for beer, has a bunghole 12 closed either by a screw-threaded stopper 13 or a flanged stopper 3, Fig. 3, and a weakened part 7 to provide a tap hole. The stopper 13 has recesses 20, for engagement by a spanner, and a packing ring 18. The stopper 3 has recesses 5 and a central opening which receives a tapered plug 4 held in position by internal pressure from the barrel contents, which may be the carbon dioxide given off by beer. When a tap (8), Fig. 4 (not shown), is inserted to displace a disc 9, the over-pressure in the barrel causes beer to flow through the opened tap until pressure is equalized; thereafter the plug 4 may be displaced as an air vent or the stopper 6 taken out.
