Abstract
1,190,546. L-Threonine and L-valine by fermentation. KYOWA HAKKO KOGYO CO. Ltd. 18 Feb., 1969 [9 March, 1968], No. 8768/69. Heading C2C. L-Threonine and L-valine are produced by culturing a hydrocarbon-utilizing micro-organism, which requires thiamine and also isoleucine, α-ketobutyric acid, or α-aminobutyric acid for growth, under aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium containing thiamine, the growth requisite and a hydrocarbon or a mixture of hydrocarbons as the main source of carbon. Specified micro-organisms are Arthrobacter paraffineus ATCC 21220, Corynebacterium hydrocarboclastus ATCC 21221, and Brevibacterium ketoglutamicum ATCC 21222, and the hydrocarbon source is preferably one or more straight or branched chain alkanes of from 10 to 20 carbon atoms, e.g. a C 11 -C 18 nparaffin mixture or kerosene. The growth requisites are preferably present in an amount of 5-50 mg./l. medium, the concentration of thiamine is between 1 and 5 mg./l, and the pH is approximately 7. The medium may also contain citric, succinic, malic, fumaric or acetic acids, their sodium salts or L-homoserine, resulting in higher yields. Small amounts of other amino acids occur as by-products of the process. Specifications 1,117,154 and 1,122,508 are referred to.
