Abstract

1,190,538. Antimicrobial treatment of fabrics. CIBA Ltd. 17 Oct., 1968 [19 Oct., 1967], No. 49279/68. Heading ASE. [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] In the treatment of cellulosic fabrics with aqueous compositions containing reagents Imparting antimicrobial or mouldproof effects to the fabric, the absorptivity of the fabrics for the aqueous compositions is improved by incorporating therein a polyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight of between 10<SP>5</SP> and 10<SP>8</SP>, preferably in an amount of 0.1-2g per litre. Fabrics made from natural or regenerated cellulose fabrics, e.g. of cotton, alone or in admixture with polyester, polyamide, polyacrylonitrile or wool fibres may be treated. The aqueous compositions may be applied by padding. In Example 4 cotton tarpaulin fabric is rendered antimicrobic by treatment with an aqueous composition containing a reaction product of phenyl-mercuric acetate and dimethylol melamine and polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 10<SP>6</SP>-10<SP>7</SP>.
