A bottle labelling machine has bottles 6 fed to a labelling station by a conveyer 4 along a line which would carry the bottles past a delivery drum 9 without contact therewith, the bottles being shifted into contact with the drum by a presser member 10 which is actuated by a pneumatic ram 13 controlled by a gear-driven rotary valve (not shown) so that each bottle contacts the middle of a label 11. The trailing half of each label is applied to a bottle by rolling of the bottle between the presser member and the drum, and the leading half 11A of the label is subsequently rolled on to the bottle by rolling of the bottle between a stationary presser member 17 and a belt 18 having its operative run 19 driven in the same direction as the conveyer. The feed of the labels from stacks 20a, 20b to the delivery drum 9 is described in Specification 777,133. The bottles are spaced on the in-feed portion of the conveyer by a worm 8, and are oriented by means of a belt 28 having a run 29 contacting the side of the bottles and driven in the opposite direction to the conveyer to rotate the bottles until a location projection 27 on each bottle engages a stop 24 carried by a belt 25. A series of rollers 30 on a chain 31 are adjustable relative to the feed worm 8 for setting in accordance with the nominal diameter of the bottles and provide back support for the bottles without impeding their rotation to effect orientation. Between the feed worm and the drum 9, the bottles are maintained in their oriented positions by a belt 34 having spring-loaded shoes urging the lower run of the belt downwardly so as to press on the bottles and clamp them to the conveyer. The feed worm and stops 24 are adjustable with respect to the conveyer in accordance with the bottle diameter. At the out-feed portion of the conveyer the stationary presser member 17 comprises a rigid back plate with a resilient layer and aflexible bottle contacting cover, and is adjustable, as is the belt 18, in accordance with the bottle diameter.
