Abstract

1,106,653. Labelling machines. COW & GATE Ltd., and G. K. CHARLES. 22 Oct., 1965 [23 July, 1964], No. 29662/64. Heading B8F. A machine for applying pressure sensitive adhesive labels preferably heat-shrinkable to cylindrical articles such as dry battery cells comprises three rollers one of which rotates the article for label application and one at least of which is movable to clamp the article between the rollers. Cells 12 fall down a shoot 17 of a magazine 11 on to slide blocks 26, 27 of a feed mechanism. The slide blocks 26, 27 are reciprocable by rack shafts actuated by a cam mechanism 56 so that a pusher block 34 feeds the lowest cell against a drive roller 63 where it is clamped by a pressure roller 40 and a support rollers 42 mounted on the slides 26, 27 respectively and moved into clamping position therewith. In synchronism with cell feed a tape arm 67 is lowered by the cam mechanism 56 to insert the end of the tape 68 between, the cell and the roller 63 so that rotation of the cell applies the tape thereto. As this progresses the arm 67 rises to tighten the tape so that a blade 109 can sever a label length on operation of a solenoid 106 when a scanning head 112 senses a mark on the tape. The length of tape cut can be adjusted by a device 91. When application is complete the slides 26, 27 withdraw and the cell drops on to a conveyer 115 for passage through a heating chamber 116 where the ends of the label extending beyond the cell curl inwards on to the ends of the cell. In a modified feed mechanism the block 34 is dispensed with the feed being effected by the roller 40. In an alternative label feed mechanism, Fig. 9 (not shown), pressure-sensitive adhesive labels are mounted on a backing strip and are separated therefrom as they contact the pressure roller 63.
