Abstract
1,189,937. Rotary sliding vane compressor. WORTHINGTON CORP. Sept. 20, 1968 [Oct. 23, 1967], No.44813/68. Heading F1F. A rotary sliding vane compressor having a working chamber 46 of substantially elliptical cross-section, end members closing the chamber, a rotor 10 concentrically mounted for rotation in the chamber having a plurality of radial longitudinally extending vane slots 22 slidably mounting vanes 20 and angularly spaced inlet ports 40 and outlet ports 38, includes an annular groove 26 in at least one end member (both as disclosed), communicating with the compressor inlet and the vane slots. The groove 26 has its inner side located at a radial position between the fully retracted and fully extended positions of the inside ends of the vanes whereby chambers defined behind the vanes will be closed to form gas pockets as the vanes are pushed inwardly so that the compressor gas acts as a spring to maintain contact between the vanes and the working chamber wall. At position A the vane 20 is in its fully extended position with gas being sucked into the working chamber and the inner end of the vane subjected to inlet pressure so that the vane is maintained in contact with the chamber wall solely by centrifugal force. As the vane moves to position C it is urged inwardly by the chamber profile in opposition to centrifugal force, vane inertia and suction pressure in the vane slot. On moving beyond position C to position D the vane slot is closed and the gas trapped in the slot is compressed and exerts pressure on the underside of the vane to urge the vane outwardly of its slot. Arcuate grooves 36, 34 in the end members inter-connect the slots between the positions D and B to prevent excessive pressure building up in a slot. In moving from B to F centrifugal force alone may not be sufficient to overcome inertia and friction to maintain contact between the vane and chamber wall, the gas pressure will then urge the vane outwardly so that contact is not lost.
