Abstract

1,188,170. Preservative packaging. AMERICAN CAN CO. 28 Dec., 1967, No. 58779/67. Heading B8C. [Also in Divisions B2 and B5] A laminated sheet material comprises a substantially gas impermeable layer 3, a layer 4 which is gas permeable and substantially impermeable to solids and liquids, and a layer 5 comprising a redox catalyst dispersed in an adhesion promoter between the layers 3 and 4. As described, the sheet material is in the form of a pouch containing dried milk. The layer 3 may be of metal foil or polyvinylidene chloride and the layer 4 may be polyethylene, polypropylene, p.v.c., rubber hydrochloride, " Cellophane " (Registered Trade Mark), or a wax/ copolymer blend, e.g. a blend of wax and ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer. The redox catalyst may be palladium, e.g. in the form of palladium black or as a coating on finelydivided alumina, or may be another platinum group metal or an organic tin compound. The adhesion promoter may be polyethylene imine, titanium acetyl acetonate, shellac or vinyl chloride, any of which may be applied in solution, or may be an adhesive or glue. The layer 4 may be applied to the layer 3 by extrusion coating or hot-melt coating, or as a preformed layer. A decorated paper layer 6 may be adhered to the layer 3. In one example, paper is laminated to aluminium foil by means of polyethylene extrusion coated on to one face of the foil. A polyethylene imine solution containing finely-divided palladium is applied to the other face of the foil and the solvent removed by evaporation. A layer of polyethylene is then extruded over the catalystcontaining layer to form the sheet material.
