Abstract

1,187,801. Vehicle detectors. L'ECLAIRAGE DES VEHICULES SUR RAIL. 31 March, 1967 [8 April, 1966; 23 Sept., 1966], No. 14910/67. Heading G4Q. A photo-electric vehicle detector comprises an optical source 11 disposed above the road and directing at least two beams on to reflecting or absorbing pads 21, 22 on the road surface, the reflected beams being received by associated detectors 16 and 17. The radiation is infra-red produced by a photo-emissive diode or by a laser, and is preferably modulated, e.g. pulsed, to avoid interference from other light sources. Two detectors spaced apart along the length of a road may be used to measure the speed or length of a vehicle, and in one arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown) the centre lane of a three-lane dual carriageway is provided with two such detectors and the outer lanes with one each. The arrangement shown in Fig. 1 uses refractive elements to produce the beams; in modifications (Figs. 3-5, not shown) the beams are produced by one or more parabolic mirrors.
