Abstract
1,186,258. Reciprocating pumps. LEWA HERBERT OTT. Oct. 2, 1967 [Oct. 4, 1966], No. 44767/67. Heading F1A. In a hydraulically actuated pump comprising a pumping chamber 10 separated from an actuating chamber 7 by a diaphragm, an actuating piston 2 is reciprocated in chamber 7, and the delivery volume of the pump is controlled by opening a valve 9 in a by-pass 8 between the actuating chamber 7 and the reservoir 3, by holding a make-up valve 5 or a pressure-relief valve 6 open, or by closing a valve (11, Fig.3 not shown), in the pump delivery line so that the pressurerelief valve opens during the pressure stroke of piston 2. The valves are electromagnetically actuated in response to pulses from a flowmeter in a line supplied by the pump. Two sets of contacts are operated by the pump drive at the bottom dead centre position of piston 2 and at a point towards the end of the suction stroke, respectively. The contacts act to connect a pulse store, fed by a pulse former operated by the flowmeter, to a pulse generator and thyristor-controlled bridge network, which control the electromagnet of the valve for controlling the pump delivery Fig. 5 (not shown). If there is a pulse in the pulse store when the contact at bottom dead centre is made, valves 9, 5 or 6 is closed or valve (11) is opened for the pump to operate. If there is not a pulse in the store when the contact at bottom dead centre is made, i. e. no pulse has come from the flowmeter during the time interval between the contact towards the end of the suction stroke and the contact at bottom dead centre, then valve 9, 5 or 6 is opened or valve (11) closed, to prevent the next delivery stroke. Since the second contact occurs towards the end of the suction stroke of the piston 2, the pump always carries out a suction stroke following its delivery stroke. A plurality of pumps may be connected in parallel with a common drive, and may be controlled individually. In Fig. 6 (not shown), six pumps are connected in parallel and two of them are controlled individually by flowmeters in different streams.
