1,183,720. Screw-and-nut gearing. DUFFNORTON CO. 20 Nov., 1967, No. 52583/67. Heading F2Q. A recirculating ball - type screw - and - nut mechanism for a screw jack comprises a nut 26 and a screw 30 drivingly connected by balls 34, two or more co-extensive longitudinal thread-interrupting recesses (26c) (Fig. 3, not shown) formed in the threaded surface of the screw or the nut, and, seated in each recess (26c), an insert 36 formed with return grooves 36a across it so that each groove 36a connects adjacent ends of one turn of the thread to form a return path for the balls 34 over the thread crest of the nut or the screw. As shown, two identical inserts 36 are secured in diametrically opposite sides of the nut bore by screws 38, and return grooves 36a alternate with part-helical continuation grooves 36b. Successive one-turn circuits for the balls start in alternate ones of the two inserts to improve load distribution, there being two circuits per three pitches of the thread helix, with half-turns 26d of the nut unused. The inserts are installed with one inverted relative to the other. The nut 26 is bolted by a flange 26a to a worm-wheel 14 meshing a worm 22 on an input shaft 24. Thrust bearings 16, 18 axially locate the nut and worm wheel assembly in a casing 12, 20.
