Abstract

1,183,575. Ground sweeping vehicles. JOHNSTON BROS. (ENG.) Ltd. and A. J. RUTHIE. 21 June, 1967 [21 June, 1966], No. 27741/66. Heading E1G. In a ground-sweeping suction or other vehicle the height of a power-driven cylindrical brush in a cowling 13 is controlled by one or more pneumatic rams 24, 25 supplied with air from the vehicle braking system. The brush may be driven hydraulically. The cowling 13 is tiltably suspended by drag arms 16, 17 and a Y frame 22 slidable in a saddle 20. The brush movements may be damped by restrictors in the rams or by auxiliary shock absorbers. The rams may be double acting but as described have their upper ends open to atmosphere and are supplied with air either (a) at full pressure or (b) at independently adjustable partial pressures, so that the brush is either (a) raised clear of the ground or (b) rests on the ground with part of its weight supported by the rams. A control circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown) includes a two-position raise/ lower valve (39), partial-pressure adjusting valves (50, 51), and a pressure-operated safety valve (34) giving priority to the brake-operating reservoir (33) over the brush-operating reservoir (37).
