Abstract
1,183,364. Settling/depositing/filtering apparatus. C. WOLKENHAUER. 7 March, 1967 [7 March, 1966], No. 10717/67. Heading B1D. [Also in Division C7] A settling/depositing chamber for removing solids from liquids and separating liquids comprises an array of concentric baffles alternately upstanding from one or more floors and depending from a cover, a central outlet tube 50 leading to a pump 40 or forming a siphon whereby liquid is drawn through the chamber. Fig. 5 shows the chamber connected to an oil sump 38 of an I.C. engine, pump 40 drawing oil through the chamber and delivering it to the bearings. The baffles form concentric solids collecting sections, also spaced axially, and external fins (not shown) on chamber wall 43 promote oil cooling. The inner baffle 58 is partially perforated and supports a wire cloth filter, and a further filter is located in external housing 52. Figs. 1, 2 (not shown) illustrate an open chamber, with each concentric section having a solids removal plug, and the cover, which does not close the chamber, having air vent plugs and being removable to withdraw floating oil therefrom. Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) illustrate this device used in a mobile machine incorporating a closed circuit and nozzle delivering washing liquid on to machine parts in a removable upper tank, from which liquid drains into the device. Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates a similar device supplemented by annular filters (72 . . . 74) and a heater (75). Fig. 7 (not shown) illustrates a device as in Figs. 1, 2 but with a closed chamber and using a pump or siphon to induce flow, possibly back to a liquid supply reservoir (83).
