Abstract

1,183,006. Regeneration of ferric chloride. D. H. THOMAS. 20 Jan., 1969 [5 April, 1968], No. 16575/68. Heading C1A. An exhausted ferric chloride etchant solution is regenerated by displacing the copper from the solution, restoring the pH of the solution to the desired level by adding concentrated hydrochloric acid, oxidizing the ferrous iron in the solution to ferric iron by adding an oxidizing agent and adjusting the ferric iron content of the solution by adding ferric chloride or water. Preferably, the copper is displaced by contacting the solution with a sufficient amount (e.g. enough to react with the copper in solution), but not a substantial excess of metallic iron. The preferred oxidizing agent is gaseous chlorine.
