Abstract
1,182,263. Continuous casting. ASHMORE, BENSON, PEASE & CO. Ltd. 16 May, 1967 [16 May, 1966], No. 21714/66. Heading B3F. In a continuous casting process in which molten metal poured into one end of an openended mould, is continuously withdrawn in the form of a casting from the other end, the mould is formed in two parts, the upstream part 61 being made from graphite and the downstream part 64 from a material of high conductivity, and cooling means is provided whereby the temperature in the mould parts is controlled to effect initial solidification of the metal in the graphite part, the mould being reciprocated in the direction of withdrawal of the casting. The mould 47 is mounted on a trolley 12, with its casting axis 50 horizontal, and a tundish 48 mounted on slides 51 is urged by spring unit 52 into engagement with the mould, the trolley 12 being reciprocated by hydraulic means 46. In operation, molten metal 54 supplied to the tundish 48 from a degassed ladle 55 is fed through an outlet 58 into the mould cavity, the outlet being plugged by an extension 78 on the starter bar 77 prior to the commencement of the casting operation. The molten metal in the tundish is heated by a burner 56 and through the opening of which may also be supplied non-reactive gas 57 to screen the molten metal therein and which passes, through the tundish feed opening to screen the incoming stream 54. The casting produced is guided by roller means 74 through a spray cooling chamber to a shearing device whereafter the sheared lengths are transferred to a storage and cooling bay to await further processing. A diagrammatic layout of a plant incorporating the casting apparatus is described which includes means for handling the finished casting and for movement and storage of the mould and tundish for repairs and replacement.
