Abstract
1,180,595. Axial-flow fans; cooling engine cylinders. AISIN SEIKI CO. Ltd. Dec. 5, 1967 [Dec.7, 1966], No.55377/67. Headings F1B and F1C. A vehicle engine cooling fan comprises two adjacent and relatively angularly adjustable bladed discs 30, 35. The discs each have the same number of blades which are preferably all of the same form and have the same peripheral pitch and inlet angle. The rear disc 35 is fixed to the driving shaft 62 via a hub 37, while the front disc 30 is mounted to the shaft via a hub 32 and a coarse screw thread 68, 69 so as to be angularly adjustable about the shaft. A thermostat 59 exposed to the engine cooling water in the water pump housing 65, has an element which expands on reaching a predetermined temperature, e.g. 85C., to move rods 59a, 55 leftwards and thereby cause the hub 32 and front disc 30 to move around the shaft against the act ion of a spiral spring 43. Guide rods 41 and arcuate slots 42 limit the angular adjustment of the front disc 30. The disc 30 is adjustable from an engine-cold position in which the blades thereof completely overlap the blades of the rear disc 35 to render the latter blades ineffective, through intermediate positions, to an engine-hot position in which the blades of the front disc 30 are symmetrically arranged between the blades of the rear disc 35 so that all of the blades are fully utilized. In an alternative embodiment, the thermostat and its associated components are omitted, the front disc is fixed to the shaft, and the rear disc is mounted to the shaft via a ball bearing so as to be angularly adjustable relatively to the front disc by the aerodynamic loading on the blades in accordance with speed. The arrangement is such that the front disc is adjusted from the fully effective blade position to the overlapping blade position as the engine speed increases from a predetermined value, e.g. 3000 r.p.m., to a maximum value, e.g. 6000 r.p.m. The fan may incorporate the features of both embodiments described.
