Abstract

1,179,338. Packaging glass sheets; boxes. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd. 15 Feb., 1968 [9 March, 1967], No. 11188/67. Headings B8C and B8P. A method of packaging glass sheets comprises stacking glass sheets face-to-face, surrounding them with a resilient waterproof tubular casing, closing the ends of the casing with waterproof end covers with side flaps which bear against the casing walls, applying rigid end frames interconnecting them to the ends of the casing. A preformed resilient waterproof casing 11 of fibrous material is sealed along a major face with waterproof tape 12 and then slid over a stack of alternate layers of paper and glass sheets placed face-to-face. Separate or attached end covers 13, 14, with side flaps 15, 18 are sealed to the casing walls with tape (25), Fig. 3 (not shown), whereupon timber end frames 19, 21 rigidly stabilized by bars 20, 22 are forced over the covers and the stack is compressed by metal bands (28) running through guides 26, 27. Packing pieces (29), Fig. 3 (not shown), may be introduced between the stack ends and covers 13, 14. The metal bands may be replaced by timber bars or long bolts with tumbuckles (not shown).
