Abstract
1,179,091. Arcing preventing in switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 30 March, 1967 [3 Jan., 1966; 25 Feb., 1966], Nos. 197/66 and 8365/66. Heading H1N. In a multibreak high voltage switch having a switching resistor 17A and resistor switch 21 in parallel with each main break 11, high value resistors 25 are connected between the main breaks and resistor switches so as to limit the current through the switching resistors 17A which would otherwise flow when only one of the main breaks is open, the resistor switchess being arranged to close before the main breaks and open after them. The resistor switches may be opened or remain closed while the main breaks are closed. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) each switch 21 and main break 11 is replaced by a plurality of series connected breaks operated simultaneously. In Figs. 2, 3, 5 the invention is shown applied to gas blast switches of the exhaust valve type; the main breaks are operated pneumatically and the resistor switches either pneumatically or by suitable linkages (not shown).
