Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3 and B8] Scrap disposal apparatus, particularly for breaking up automobile bodies comprises a flattening unit 20, a shearing unit 21 for shearing bars from the end of slabs produced in unit 20, a rotary chopper unit 22 for chopping slugs from the end of the sheared bars, a slinger unit 23 for receiving the chopped slugs from unit 22 initially disintegrate them and convey the resulting material to a hammermill cleaning and compacting unit 24 and a magnetic separator unit 25. The slugs are whipped by chains (149) Figs. 14 and 15 not shown, attached to plates (148) secured to a rotatable shaft (145) up through a duct 154 onto the conical upper surface 170 of a hammermill 24 which comprises a downwardly tapering casing 156 housing a rotatable shaft 159 carrying discs 166 and toothed hammer cutters 168 loosely journalled on shafts 167 passing through the discs. Blades 174 at the bottom of the shaft 159 sweep the hammered material through a duct 173 onto a conveyor (175) travelling below a magnetic separator (176) which discharges all ferrous materials into a second slinger unit before final discharge.
