Abstract

1,177,677. Rectifying. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 28 Feb., 1968 [2 March, 1967], No. 9967/67. Heading H2F. [Also in Division H3] In a circuit for simultaneously firing a group of thyristors 4 connected across A.C. source 42 a control network has a capacitor 16 charged from a D.C. source in the form of rectifying means 14 connected to the A.C. source 1, 2 and a switching device 17 discharges the capacitor 16 via the primary windings 11 of transformers 10 which have their secondary windings) connected to respective thyristors. Twelve thyristors 4, two of which are shown, are connected in series with a load 3. Inductors 5 limit the rate of change of forward current when the thyristors are triggered and the voltage sharing resistors 6 and capacitors 7 are effective for hole storage purposes during the thyristor recovery time. The control circuit includes a light-actuated diode 18 controlled by a laser beam passed via a light guide, or electromagnetic high power device so as to trigger the thyristor 17 and discharge the capacitor 16. The light may be infra-red. A number of resistor and capacitor networks 12, 13 corresponding in number to the group of thyristors 4 may be provided to prevent oscillations occurring during turn on of the thyristors. A plurality of these groups of thyristors 4 and associated control networks may be connected in series with the load 3 and may have their lightsensitive diodes triggered simultaneously via light guides energized from a single source. Alternatively windings 20 may be provided so that one group is triggered by a light-sensitive a diode 18 and the thyristor 17 of each other group is controlled from a winding 20 of a preceding group. The switching device 17, 18 may be a photo diode, light-activated thyristor or photo-transistor. Each thyristor 4 may be replaced by several in parallel each having a secondary winding on the associated transformer core and a number of series strings of thyristors 4 may be connected in parallel. The circuit may be used in a H.V.D.C. converter.
