Abstract

1,172,967. Saponified vinyl acetate polymers. KURASHIKI RAYON K.K. 8 April, 1968 [12 April, 1967], No. 16808/68. Heading C3P. Fully or partially saponified vinyl acetate homopolymer or ethylene copolymer containing not more than 80% mol. of ethylene is obtained by polymerizing in solution in tert.-butanol, to a vinyl acetate conversion of 15-90%, adding neutral or basic cupric acetate as polymerization and transesterification inhibitor and distilling off vinyl acetate and tert.-butanol, adding a lower alkanol in an amount at least equimolar to the acetic acid radical content of the polymer and saponifying in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. The preferred polymerization catalyst is azobis-isobutyronitrile.
