Abstract

1,172,294. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. L. H. COLTON. 1 July, 1968 [8 July, 1967], No. 31525/67. Heading B5K. [Also in Divisions A3 and D1] The toe of a stocking knitted of a thermoplastic yarn is closed by fusion. This is performed on a circular knitting machine by providing a pair of grippers 13 which on completion of the knitting are projected within the normal take-down tube 7 to constrict and grip the tubular fabric. The continued rotation of the needle cylinder causes the tubular fabric still held by the needles to become twisted about itself as at 33 until the upper end 34 of the twisted portion abuts against a heater member 28. The element of the member 28 having been connected to a low-voltage supply, contact of the end 34 of the twisted portion 33 with the heater member 28 causes the thermoplastic material to fuse together at this point providing an effective closure of the toe. Alternatively a heater member may be positioned on each of the gripper members as at 35, Fig. 3, so that gripping of the tube by the grippers also causes contact of the thermoplastic material with the heater members on the grippers and consequently fusion of the material to close the toe.
