Abstract

1,171,961. Centrifugal fans. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb.24, 1967 [Feb. 24, 1966], No.8276/66. Heading F1C. [Also in Division F2] In a centrifugal fan having backwardly-curved blades 16, Fig. 5, a back plate 8, 11 and a frustoconical ring 10, the blades are moulded integrally from a plastics material, e.g. nylon, with the back plate, or the frusto-conical ring or, as shown, with the frusto-conical ring and a central portion 8 of the back plate. The remainder of the back plate is formed by a plastics ring portion 11 having a circular outer periphery and a decagonal inner periphery and secured to the central portion 8 and to a ring 12 by bonding, e.g. welding. A boss 9 has four axially-extending fingers 18 for securing the fan to the shaft of an electric motor by fitting a metal sleeve (not shown) over the fingers. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 1 to 4 (not shown), the back plate is formed by a single flat unitary disc and is integrally moulded with the blades, the frusto-conical ring being attached to the free axial ends of the blades by engaging tabs on these ends with complementary openings in the frustoconical ring and bonding at least some of the tabs to the ring as by welding.
