Abstract
1,170,442. Air filter. TECALEMIT (ENG.) Ltd. 10 Feb., 1967 [11 Feb., 1966], No. 6169/66. Heading B1T. [Also in Divisions B5 and Dl] An air filter element comprises fibres of Merino wool and of a copolymer of vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile, and powdered paratertiary-butyl-phenol-formaldehyde, and is treated to develop electrostatic charges to assist filtration. The constituents may be incorporated in a single layer, but in Fig. 1 (not shown) the wool and powder form a batt (8) which is sandwiched between batts (9, 10) of copolymer, and batts (9, 10) are backed by scrims (11, 12). The layers are bonded to form a peripheral lip (6), which is retained between two parts of a filter housing for an I.C. engine intake. In manufacture (Fig. 2, not shown), the powder is added to the fibres (wool or mixture) in or after a carding machine (15) which forms the batt, and the batt passes between corrugated rollers driven at speeds which vary out of phase, or between reciprocating platens, which moves the fibres relatively to develop the charges. Acrylic resin may then be applied as a liquid or vapour, which acts as bonding agent and helps the batt to retain its charges. Passage of air in use may develop further charges.
