Abstract
1,169,100. Adhesive pads. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 30 Sept., 1966, No. 50175/67. Headings B2E and B2K. [Also in Divisions B5 and B8] A resilient rubbery adhesive member for application as a support or bumper pad to a smooth surface comprises a resilient rubbery pad having a smooth surface to which is directly bonded a layer of coherent pressuresensitive adhesive, the bond between the adhesive layer and the smooth surface being at least twice e.g. at least three times, the bond obtainable by merely pressing the exposed surface of the adhesive layer against a similar smooth surface of such a rubbery pad. The pad may be of polyurethane, may be ¢ inch thick, and may have the following physical properties: Shore A-2 durometer 40 to 100; ball hardness 1.5 to 80 1bs; compression modulus (1%) 100 to 3000 psi; compression 50% 150 to 5000 psi; recovery from 50% compression at least about 75%; and standard compression set not more than about 15%. The pad may have bonded to its smooth surface an adhesive component having an inner pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, a central thin strong flexible film e.g. of plasticized polyvinyl chloride; and an outer pressuresensitive adhesive layer, the bond between the inner adhesive layer and the smooth surface of the pad being at least twice the bond obtainable by merely pressing the outer adhesive layer against a similar smooth surface. The adhesive member may be produced by holding together and bonding the flat smooth surface and the inner face of the adhesive component whilst the outer face of the adhesive layer is isolated from the pad. The pad may he formed from a liquid self-curing resinous composition e.g. a polyurethane-forming composition, while maintaining in contact with the composition the inner adhesive layer of a pressure sensitive adhesive sheet material having an inner pressure sensitive adhesive layer a central thin strong flexible barrier film e.g. a vinyl resin film, and an outer pressuresensitive adhesive layer. A steel shipping drum may have the member adhered to the bottom thereof, the thickness of the pad being just sufficient to maintain the exposed face of the pad within the plane of the outer edge of the surrounding chime of the drum.
