[Also in Division B8] In an apparatus for pasteurizing cans of beer and the like, especially cans having a capacity of the order of four litres, both ends of the sealed cans (i.e. top and bottom) are supported during pasteurization and subsequent cooling to prevent distortion thereof due to the internal pressure produced within the cans during the heat treatment. In one embodiment the cans are transported through a continuous pasteurization apparatus between two suitably spaced continuous conveyers, the two conveyors having mounted flatly thereon disc shaped supporting elements of diameter slightly less than the internal diameter of the can ends, the elements on one convey- or being aligned with those on the other conveyer to provide simultaneously support to both ends of the cans transported therebetween. The disc shaped elements may be perforated. The conveyers may run either horizontally or vertically. In another embodiment, intermediate elements transported endlessly between the two conveyers allow the simultaneous supporting of a plurality of rows of cans instead of a plurality of single cans passing in a line through the apparatus. In a further embodiment, the cans are moved axially between two conveyers, each conveyer carrying equally spaced disc shaped supports mounted perpendicularly thereon, the supports on each conveyer alternating with those on the other conveyer, and each disc supporting the bottom of one can and the top of the next adjacent can. In yet another embodiment, the cans are locked between a fixed and a hinged wall of a frame, the walls carrying suitably spaced protruding discs to align with the ends of the cans. This embodiment is suitable for use with manual or semi-automatic installations.
