Abstract

1,167,400. Packaging-machines. STONE CONTAINER CORP. 14 Aug., 1967 [17 Jan., 1967], No. 37332/67. Heading B8C. Apparatus for securing an article to a porous base board by vacuum drawing a heated plastics sheet over it and into adhering engagement with the board, includes a support for the sheet which is movable between a stationary heater and the base board supporting platen and control means to maintain the heater temperature above ambient but below the sheet forming temperature during the times the heater is not heating the sheet. The platen 42, perforated for application of suction by fans 120, is movable between the loading position of Fig. 1 and the working position of Fig. 3. The sheet support comprises hinged frames 50, 52 which clamp a web 47 drawn between them and carry it to the position of Fig. 1 adjacent a heater 60. The heater elements 64 are closer adjacent its periphery to counter the heat sink effect of the frames. A fan 66 reduces the temperature to the controlled level when the film is not being heated. When the film droops, the frames are lowered by rack and pinion means to the position of Fig. 3 where the frames make sealing contact with strips 41 on the machine base and platen. Vacuum is then applied to package the article, e.g. a lamp stand 110. The frames are now opened and the article drawn forward manually, pulling fresh material into them. On the frames being again closed, blades 132 carried by their front walls, sever the web and release the package. The height of the heater is adjustable.
