Abstract

1,166,982. Television pick-up tubes; photoconductive elements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 29 March, 1968 [8 May, 1967], No. 15123/68. Headings H1D and H1K. A pick-up tube has a radiation transmitting face-plate 12 and an input screen 14 within the envelope comprising a porous layer of an insulating material exhibiting the property of generating free electrons from the material into the voids within the layer in response to input radiations, of wavelength 1-10,000 Š units, wherein an electron beam is directed on to one surface of the screen to establish a first potential thereon, and wherein an electrical conductive layer between the screen and the faceplate is at a second potential more positive than the first. The porous layer has a density less than 10% of its normal bulk density and an electric field across it of less than 10<SP>5</SP> volts/cm. The conductive layer may be of nickel, palladium, tungsten or platinum of thickness 50- 250 Š units. The porous layer may be of KCI, CsI, NaCl, NaBr, Se, As, CuO, Cu 2 O, Ag 2 S, AgI, AgBr, AgCl, LiF, NaF, RbI, CuCl, KBr, CuBr, CdBr 2 , NaI, KI or CsTe2, and the thickness may be 10-30 microns. The tube faceplate may be of LiF, CaF, BaF, MgF, glass, crystal quartz or fused quartz.
