Abstract

1,097,447. Photo-conductive device. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. May 10, 1965 [May 28, 1964], No. 19727/65. Headings H1D and H1K. In a photo-conductive device having a vitreous layer of photo-conductive material which tends to crystallize, the layer is coated with a layer of material which is transparent to all visible light and which mechanically engages the photo-conductive material and restrains crystal growth therein. In an embodiment, as shown, a vidicon tube comprises a glass envelope 14 having a glass faceplate 16, the plate being sealed using an indium ring 18 and clamping ring 20. A mesh screen 22 is provided across the end of a tubular focusing electrode 24. The target 12 comprises a signal electrode 26 of SnO which is transparent and conducting, a vitreous layer 30 of Se and two stabilizing layers 28 and 32, the layer 32 being insulated from the ring 18. The vitreous Se layer may contain up to 25 weight per cent Te and 3 weight per cent As or Sb. The stabilizing layer may comprise Au, Ag, Cu, Rh, Pd, Ge, Ge oxide, Ga, Ga oxide, In, Sb, Sb sulphide or oxide. Some of these materials are not suitable for layer 28 due to lateral conductivity. Only one stabilizing layer may be used. The preferred thickness of each layer is specified. It is stated that no chemical reaction takes place between the layers.
