A taker-in unit for a carding engine comprises a taker-in cylinder 11 and a transfer cylinder 12, housings 16, 17, 18, 19 enclosing the cylinders, at least two rolls 14, 15 beneath cylinder 12 to work the material a cylinder 12 and return it thereto, and a knife 26 above the nip between cylinders 11, 12. The arrangement reduces unwanted air current adjacent feed table 22 and main cylinder 2. The lower housing comprises a part 18 carrying at its leading edge a stripper knife 23 and an adjustable shield 19 between cylinder 12 and main cylinder 2. Knife 26 is bevelled so that its edge is closest to cylinder 11.
