Abstract

1,164,380. Hearing aids; automatic gain control. PORTESCAP, LE PORTE-ECHAPPEMENT UNIVERSEL S.A. 11 May, 1967 [9 June, 1966], No. 21828/67. Headings H4J and H4R. A hearing aid with automatic gain control comprises a signal divider located between two stages of an amplification chain, the divider having at least two impedances, at least one of which is variable and is controlled by a control signal as a function of the input signal. A signal divider Z 1 , Z 2 (Fig. 1) is inserted between stages A 1 and A 2 of five amplifier stages A 1 to A 5 . A control signal from the output of stage A 4 is fed to the divider Z 1 , Z 2 over a rectifier R and amplifier A 6 . Amplifier stage A 5 permits setting of the output sound level and the frequency response. Element Z 1 is a resistor. Circuit Z 2 includes a transistor T 1 (Fig. 2) two diodes D 1 , D 2 and two resistors r 1 , r 2 . The diodes may be replaced by transistors. If a voltage of suitable polarity and amplitude is applied to the input of transistor T 1 the voltages at the terminals of diodes D 1 , D 2 permit passage of current in each of them. The impedance between point S and earth therefore decreases and thus the amplitude of the signal at point S also decreases. The rectifier R includes a transistor T 3 , two resistors r 4 , r 5 and a capacitor C and supplies a rectified voltage proportional to the amplitude of the signal. Alternatively, the signal divider (Z 1 , Z 2 ), Fig. 3 (not shown) may be inserted between stages (A 1 , A 2 ). The input signal is fed to the signal divider by a controlled amplifying chain composed of an amplifier stage (A 7 ) followed by the control chain of Fig. 2.
