Abstract
1,163,652. Breaking. TYNE WIRE ROPES Ltd. 31 Jan., 1967, No. 4554/67. Heading B3E. [Also in Division D1] A wire-rope manipulating machine comprises two spaced vices 25 and 36 which firmly clamp a wire rope at two longitudinally spaced points, means being provided for producing relative rotational and axial movement of the two vices and for burning the rope between the vices. Each vice has a pair of opposing notched jaws 55, 60 between which the rope is clamped, and each vice is carried by a spindle mounted in an upright portion of a base frame 10. The spindle of vice 36 is rotated by means of capstan 33 but is constrained against axial movement, while the spindle of vice 25 is screw threaded for both axial and rotational movement. Slots extending through the spindles are aligned with the notches between the jaws of the vices for easy threading of the rope. A gas pipe 40 ending in fish tail burners 43 is arranged between the vices and directs flames on to the rope for the purpose of breaking the rope to form tapered end portions. Unwinding of the rope portion between the vices is brought about by turning the capstans 19, 33, thus enabling a marker to be inserted at a predetermined position.
