Abstract

1468324 Tubular stranders; tension control SOUTHWIRE CO 2 May 1975 [2 May 1974] 18387/75 Heading D1T A tubular stranding machine 10 has a plurality of bobbins 17 mounted in the rotating frame 11 each with its longitudinal axis disposed perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the frame 11, there being means for preventing relative rotation between the bobbin 17 and the frame 10; and means 24 rotatable about the bobbin axis for guiding wire overend off each bobbin, each bobbin being mounted on a bobbin support which extends inwardly from said frame and intersects the axis thereof, said bobbins being disposed in their respective supports so that said axis of the frame passes through the centers of gravity of the bobbins: and successive ones of said supports extend from diametrically opposite sides of the frame. Each bobbin support in Fig. 1 comprises a hub 18 that is rigid with the frame 11 and a bobbin support stem 19 that is pivotally connected to each hub 18 by means of a pivot pin (20), Fig. 2 (not shown). A locking sleeve 37 can be screwed to a setting in which it holds the hub 18 and stem 19 in axial alignment. When the locking sleeve 37 is unscrewed and moved away from the stem 19, the stem 19 can be swung about its pivot 20 so that the stem 19 is directed towards the viewer in Fig. I to facilitate its removal through an opening in the wall of the frame 11. At the end of each bobbin is a freely rotatable suport arm 24 on which is a guide 25 for the wire. The guide 25 prevents the wire from touching the end flange of the bobbin and exerts a tension control on the wire. The rotatable arms 24 cause the drawn off wires to be twisted and this twist is used to give the resulting stranded cable a tightening effect preventing the cable from unstranding itself.
