Abstract

1,161,091. Abrading. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 22 Dec., 1966 [4 Jan., 1966], No.249/66. Heading B3D. A method of lapping or polishing spheres comprises supporting a sphere 20 between at least three cups 14, 15, 16 resiliently pressed against the sphere and rotating the cups in the presence of an abrasive. The cups are carried by plastics collars 8, 9, 10 of foamed rubber on the shafts 5, 6, 7 of electric motors 1, 2, 3, motor 1 being fixed and motors 2, 3 being axially adjustable. The cups may be of aluminium if the sphere is of beryllium alloy for use in a gyroscope and are formed with three frusto-conical surfaces 17, 18, 19, surface 17 being the lapping surface. The speed of the motors is individually controlled and for a one-inch sphere the cups are rotated at 100 r.p.m., the sphere being smeared with diamond lapping paste. For polishing, the sphere is smeared with paste and the cups are rotated at twice the lapping speed. In an alternative embodiment, the cups are supported by helicallywound springs. For lapping, each cup may be rotated at a different speed.
