Abstract
1,160,855. Gettering; electric incandescent lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 19 April, 1968 [19 May, 19671, No. 18667/68. Headings H1D and H1F. Hermetically sealed electrical devices, e.g. incandescent lamps, are gettered by flashing therein pure crystalline phosphorus pentanitride. As applied to incandescent lamps, the phosphorus pentanitride is preferably used alone in gas-filled types, while in vacuum lamps it is preferably mixed with cryolite and red phosphorus. In either case, a quantity of oxidizing agent-preferably Sb 2 O 4 or BiPO 4 may also be included. The phosphorus pentanitride is formed into a slurry with amyl acetate, the lamp filament being dipped in the slurry and subsequently heated to evaporate the amyl acetate. After the filament mount has been sealed to the remainder of the lamp envelope, and the lamp evacuated and filled with gas, if desired, the filament is heated to vaporize and decompose the pentanitride into white phosphorus and nitrogen.
