Abstract
1,160,590. Moulding ceramic powder. YUKEN INDUSTRY CO. Ltd. 20 March, 1967, No. 12991/67. Heading B5A. A powdery ceramic material 6, containing less than 2% moisture, is moulded to form hollow articles e.g. dishes, bowls, or trays, within a mould cavity 5 defined between a metal element 1 and a rubber element 3 to which mechanical or fluid pressure is subsequently applied. Prior to moulding, the powder is distributed in the cavity 5 by rotation of the mould 1 on shaft 7 or, alternatively or in addition thereto, the assembly may be subjected to electromagnetic vibration or high frequency oscillation. The mould may be encased and supported at the sides thereof in a pressure tight vessel (11) (Fig. 3, not shown), to prevent outward expansion of the mould, for the application of mechanical pressure from a ram (12). Fluid pressure may alternatively be applied via pressurized oil in a fluid tight container when the rubber mould (3) is preferably provided with reinforcement (16) (Fig. 5, not shown), to minimize article fractures arising from radial contraction of the mould subsequent to the moulding operation and the pressurized liquid is preferably sealed from the rubber element (3) by a thin pressure applying membrane (15). Alternatively, (Fig. 6, not shown) a pressurized rubber bag (18) conforming to the exterior shape of the rubber element (3) may be employed and into contact with which the rubber element (3) is urged in a high pressure vessel (11) by a jack (19) prior to pressurizing the bag (18). The ceramic powder may be coated with rubber, synthetic resins or metal.
