Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A flocked material comprises a non-woven net of a thermoplastic material produced by stressing bi-axially a sheet of a thermoplastic material having a regular pattern of embossments or cavities on at least one surface, and adhered to the net, at least one flocked fibre layer. The non-woven net may have a flocked layer adhered to each side; or a flocked layer adhered to one side and a layer of paper adhered to the other side. The layer of paper may be a cellulosic handkerchief tissue with a weight of 17 grams/sq. metre. The stressing may have taken place in the two directions sequentially or simultaneously. The thermoplastic material may be a polymer or copolymer of olefins eg. ethylene and propylene; and preferably high density polyethylene. The flocked fibre layer may be made up of natural or synthetic fibres cut to a length in the range of 0.5 to 4 millimetres. The flocked material may be produced by coating at least one side of a non woven net produced by stressing biaxially a thermoplastic sheet having a regular pattern of embossments or cavities on at least one surface with adhesive and flocking fibres onto the adhesive. Both sides of the net may be coated with adhesive and fibres are flocked onto each side of the coated net, or fibres may be flocked onto one side of the coated net and paper is adhered to the other side. The flocking may be by electrostatic flocking or by a beater bar or by a combination of both methods. The adhesive which may be pressure, heat or solvent responsive may be a curing acrylic adhesive or a hot melt of a co-polymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. In order to maintain the porous character of the fabric provided by the network structure, the holes of the net should not be allowed to become blocked with adhesive. The flocked material may be used in dress making and for blanket material.
