Each pile yarn carrier 10 has a pawl 9 co-operating with notches, when aligned, in a group of selector bars 1, 2 which are individually moved by a jacquard mechanism to either a raised or lowered position so that, e.g. a group of two bars with three notches each will give four positions in which only one notch in each bar is aligned, a group of three bars will give eight positions and so on. This allows a yarn carrier to be given, say, sixteen different positions when a jacquard needs only four columns of holes, one for each bar. In Figure 8 the carriers 10 are raised during selection by a cam operated lever 41 and are lowered to allow their pawls 9 to engage the aligned notches. For selection the bars 1, 2 are raised by a cam operated lever 29 and stops 22 selected by the jacquard are pivoted under the bars so that when the bars are lowered the selected bars remain at a higher level than the non-selected bars. To save space groups of bars may be located alternatively on either side of the carriers 10 (Fig. 10, not shown) and the carriers may be raised by a resilient beam (Fig. 11, not shown). The jaquard cords are attached to the stops 22 by springs (see also Fig. 12, not shown).
