The load of a blast furnace body 1 carried by the shell (3) thereof on an annular plate (4) is supported by four equally-spaced columns 5, each having a top portion 6 on the upper surface of which are mounted two steel plates 7 which come into contact with the annular plate (4), the plates 7 being so spaced apart that the stress concentration produced in the shell by one of them is independent of that produced by the other.
