Abstract

1,158,497. Transferring designs. ARNOLD DESIGNS Ltd. 1 May, 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 19912/66. Heading B6C. [Also in Division A3] Thermoset synthetic resin articles bearing printing images are produced by printing an image on to a thermoplastic synthetic resin sheet; if necessary shaping the sheet by heat dpressure; contacting the reverse-printedsurface with a polymerizable mixture of components of a thermosetting synthetic resin, partially curing the thermosetting resin; and stripping the thermoplastics sheet from the thermoset resin which now bears the printed image. The thermoplastics resin is preferably polyvinyl alcohol, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethylene or cellulose acetate; the image is preferably printed in a polystyrene ink; the thermosetting resin may be an epoxy or a polyester resin, and may be part of an article formed as a laminate of the thermoset resin and resin-bonded glass fibre. Apparatus Fig. 1.-An example of apparatus for forming the articles is shown in Fig. 1, where a moulding table 2 carries a vertically-movable platform 3 having a sheet of gauze 4 through which air can be withdrawn from the vacuum chamber 5; the platform 3 is reciprocated on an hydraulic or pneumatic-operated piston 6, through which passes a conduit 7 connected via hose 8 to a vacuum pump. A pre-printed, e.g. screen printed, thermoplastics sheet 9 is clamped across the top of the vacuum chamber. A cover 20 holds radiant heating elements 22. In use, platform 3 is lowered to the Fig. 1 position and a number of male moulds 30 are located on the gauze 4; the sheet 9 is positioned and softened by the heating element 22; the platform is raised and a vacuum applied, thus causing cavities to be moulded into the sheet, in desired registration with the printed images. After removing the sheet from the apparatus, the cavities are filled with the components of the thermosetting resin which is allowed to cure at room temperature or preferably at 70-100‹ F. before removing the printed articles from the sheet. Typical articles formed include wall tiles, table mats, and car instrument facia panels.
