Abstract

1,149,694. Moulding fibre-resin articles. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. 6 Dec., 1967 [13 Dec., 1966], No. 55869/66. Heading B5A. Hollow fibre-resin articles are made by applying the fibre-resin material to a rigid heatexpansible former, enclosing the whole in a layer of heat-shrinkable plastics material and finally heating the assembly to expand the mandrel and shrink the layer thus applying the desired forming pressure to the fibre-resin material. The heat may additionally be utilized to cure the resin and may be applied via the former which may be of aluminium. The plastics layer may be in the form of a wound tape and its action may be enhanced by vacuum. If desired, a removable porous layer which serves to catch air or gas bubbles forced out of the fibre-resin material may be located directly underneath the plastics layer. Silicone rubber may be used as the resin to give flexible articles.
