In a mass spectrometer, liquid to be analysed is transferred directly from a vessel 1 into a capillary leak 2 formed by the slot-shaped, flattened tip of a tube 3 so that vapours of the liquid are formed in the vacuum system 5 of the mass spectrometer. The tube 3 is of copper.
