Abstract
1,155,836. Valves. WADDINGTON & DUVAL (HOLDINGS) Ltd. 11 Oct., 1966 [11 Oct., 1965], No. 43085/65. Heading F2V. A tap 10 for a can 17, drum or the like comprises a rigid hollow plunger 12 slidable within a resilient sealing gland 14 arranged to fit into a hole in the can or drum, the gland being of material which is resistant to the liquid to be dispensed, and an inner plunger 16 slidable within the hollow plunger, the plungers being arranged to be able to lie substantially flush with the outer surface of the can or drum during transit, the hollow plunger being outwardly slidable in the gland to bring the tap to a preparatory position ready for dispensing, and the inner plunger being outwardly slidable within the hollow plunger when the latter is in the preparatory position so that liquid can be dispensed through a discharge opening 42 near the outer end of the hollow plunger. The gland 14 may be of natural rubber or neoprene and is snap-fitted to the can or drum, the flange of the gland having a rearwardly directed circular lip to ensure a good seal with the drum. The plunger 12 may be of polypropylene or acrylonitrile-butadione-styrene and the plunger 16 of material similar to that used for the gland, its outer end being closed by a disc 53 provided with a loop handle 54 and secured by ribbed stems 56. Arrow-shaped projections 44 ensure correct location of the plunger 12 in the gland, and projections 58 engage a slotted rim 60 on the plunger 16 to enable the two plungers to be withdrawn from the gland simultaneously, the plunger 12 being freed for further outward movement alone by rotation relative to the plunger 16. During discharge of liquid, air enters the plunger 16 by way of an annular recess 41. In the transit position of the tap the handle 54 is compressed to a flattened position by a detachable cover.
