Abstract
115,309. Stewart, A., and Stewart, D. S. May 31, 1917. Locking-apparatus for steering-gear; connecting centrally-pivoted axles for steering. - In motor-vehicles in which the front and rear wheels are both driven and steered, means are provided for releasing the coupling connecting the front and rear wheels and for locking the rear wheels to the chassis. The vehicle comprises an upper chassis 5 and a lower chassis 8 connected by expansible springs 10 and prevented from moving horizontally with respect to each other by links 12. The hollow front and rear axles 23 are secured to pivot pins 21 mounted in the lower chassis and are provided with a depending pin 25 on which are mounted the lower ends of radius rods 26, the upper ends of which are secured to the lower chassis. The front axle is connected to the ends of a bar 41 mounted on the pin 25 by crossed links 40, and the bar is made with an aperture 48 which is normally engaged by the end of the lever 42 pivotally mounted in the axle. The lever 42 is maintained in the locking position by the spring 44, but is disengaged when the pin 45 carried by the lower chassis is depressed through the movement of a bell-crank lever 47 caused by rocking a lever 53 disposed near the driver's seat.
