Abstract

1,152,816. Rotary mowers. FLYMO S.A. 2 April, 1968, No. 15896/68. Heading A1F. An electrically driven rotary mower comprising housing 1, wheels 3, cutter disc 9 and vertical power drive shaft 8 is characterized in that two electric motors 14, 15 which are similar in every respect and whose axes are horizontal, are mounted symmetrically with the respect to the drive shaft 8. Each motor shaft is fitted with a bevel gear 12, 13 drivingly engaged with a common bevel gear 11 non rotatably mounted on the drive shaft 8. The housings of the motors 14, 15 are rigidly connected to a sleeve 4 that is supported by struts 5 to housing 1, the sleeve containing bearings 6 and 7 that journal the drive shaft 8. An air impeller 10 rigidly mounted on the drive shaft draws air from an aperture in housing 1 and expells it under rim 2. The air current prevents accumulation of grass clippings in housing 1 and may provide an air cushion supporting the mower. The two electric motors are of the series-wound type and are connected to the power source through a flexible cable and a switch (not shown) which may couple the two motors in series during starting and later switch them in parallel to the source of electric current. Both the wheels and the cutter are adjustable.
