Abstract
1,151,414. Welding by fusion; friction welding. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Oct., 1967 [14 Oct., 1966], No. 46135/66. Heading B3R. Two parts 1, 5 are welded together by friction welding an annular ferrule to one of the parts, e.g. 1, to form a spigot thereon and by welding the other part, e.g. 5, to the ferrule by friction welding or non-consumable electrode arc welding (Fig. 2, not shown). If the other part is friction welded the composition of the ferrule is standard and may be the same as that of either part, but if the other part is welded by non- consumable electrode arc welding the ferrule has a non-standard composition, e.g. up to 0À15% carbon, up to 0À02% sulphur and not less than 1À0% manganese. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), two ferrules may be used. The two parts to be welded may be a tube and tube-plate of a heat exchanger.
